Salford this weekend

This weekend Roisin will also be one of the performers at the Un-Convention event in Salford. It's not quite clear what exactly she will be doing, but possibly a multimedia DJ set.

"The goal of Un-Convention is to bring together like minded individuals to discuss the future of independent music," as their website states.

Demon Lover update

Roisin spoke to The Independent about her upcoming release of Demon Lover (when?) and her wish to work with Daft Punk:

* For her next trick, Irish pop's proto-Gaga Roisin Murphy has been in the studio working on an "epic track" with a coterie of UK hip-hop artists. "Demon Lover", she told me cheerfully at Somerset House during London Fashion Week, is "a bit of an all-star event, with lots of British talent like Wiley and Kano". But the singer, 37 (best known as the former frontwoman of Moloko), explained that the band at the top of her wish list of collaborators had proven elusive so far. "I never normally say who I'd collaborate with, but the truth is – and it may never happen – it would be a dream come true to work with [art-house electro outfit] Daft Punk. How do you track them down, though? I mean, they live in a subway in Paris or something." Murphy will next be able to catch the perennially helmeted Parisians appearing briefly in December's sci-fi sequel Tron: Legacy, for which they've composed the soundtrack.

Last night Roisin attended a party celebrating Naomi Campbell's 25 year career as a top model.

The party was hosted by Dolce & Gabbana in London.

Kylie glamour

Kylie Minogue has tweeted Roisin on her recent Twitter picture saying: 'Lady, you STILL give glamour!'

How could we possibly disagree with Miss Minogue? Speaking of her, I am totally hooked on Change Your Mind, an unreleased song from the Aphrodite album sessions.

Here are two exclusive pictures of Roisin taken on the 5th of July 2003, her 30th birthday. They were taken by photographer Marko Krunic in Roisin's hotel room in Novi Sad, Serbia. At the time she was touring Europe with Moloko to promote the Statues album.

Toddla T collaboration

Sheffield DJ Toddla T has revealed to Clash Music that his upcoming debut album will feature a song with Roisin Murphy.

Toddla is currently in the process of mixing the album, which will be released later this year or early 2011. He and Roisin spent some time in the studio together in the summer of 2009, as I reported at the time.

Back in 2008, when he remixed You Know Me Better, Toddla told me what he thinks about working with Roisin:

She lived in Sheffield (my home town) for a while, so even though we might be a musical generation apart, we've both been influenced by Sheffield's unique eclecticism. This connection makes working with her really special for me.

Roisin in Shangai

This completely slipped my attention last month, but early July Roisin performed at the centennial party for fashion label Ermenegildo Zegna. The event took place in the Chinese city Shanghai.

Zegna designer Alessandro Sartori made the red suit especially for Roisin. I have to say she looks amazing in it.

Roisin talks to The Irish Times

An interview with Roisin from The Irish Times: 

You’re DJing at Milk next weekend – what can we expect from you? It’s a mixture of stuff. It starts with me playing other people’s tracks and, gradually, I bring the singing and my own tracks in, mixed in with stuff which feels right. I don’t how I’m going to do it, but I’m definitely going to expand this idea to make it more of an one-woman show.

Any precedents for what you have in mind? I want to make it like the Chemical Brothers, but I’m not two blokes, I’m a bird. I’ll bring in visuals and sound effects and make tracks specifically for the set, but no band. The tracks don’t suit bringing in a drummer and a bass-player and all of that. This way is a bit more Wizard Of Oz , you know, when you see the wizard behind the curtain at the end, you can’t believe it’s just one man and all those little knobs.

Have you had a hankering to be a superstar DJ all this time? I tried many times to DJ. I remember doing something like this with another DJ from Sheffield when I was in Moloko. We went out to Ibiza and played some gigs as the Moloko Sound System. But it was never fully developed and we always ended up going back to a live band. Now, though, I’m ready to do it. It can still be quite dramatic and theatrical even with just me on stage. I think it astonishes people to see me come onstage on my own and I’m still a show. (laughs)

You’ve released a couple of tracks over the last year – can we expect an album soon? No, it’s going to be more tracks for now. I’m not making an album, but that might change down the line. It’s down to a convergence of reasons. I’m a new mum and I haven’t got a great amount of time to go on promotional tours. Of course, the situation will arise when it will feel right to do another album, but I don’t think any of the tracks I’m doing at the moment would work stuck onto an album. I want to stay true to my word and just concentrate on tracks for dancefloors for now. Of course, once I’ve released 10 tracks, you can go off and download all 10 and make your own album.

The new tracks are most definitely dancefloor-orientated – was that change in tack difficult to get your head around?
I find it a real challenge to write music for clubs because the music has to be very functional and, I suppose, dry. The tracks which work best in clubs are quite raw. You can’t let the millions of other possibilities interfere with the track. Making dance music is very specific and you have to be very blunt about how you go about things. In Moloko, things tended to get long-winded and the productions got bigger and further away from the dancefloor. With Ruby Blue , I wasn’t aiming for the dancefloor, but I was with Overpowered.

Are you still signed to EMI? No, I’m signed to Mickey Murphy’s Daughter now. That’s what I call my label. I have no regrets about EMI. I had such a fucking ball making Overpowered and all the people around me at the time were so wonderful. My A&R guy was brilliant. Unfortunately for me, EMI got taken over and they fired everyone who had anything to do with me. They even closed down the EMI imprint that I was on so my label didn’t exist any more so it was time to move on.

Roisin to feature on Tony Christie album

After singing together at the iTunes Live festival in 2008, I can reveal that Roisin will make a guest appearance on Tony Christie's album Now Is The Time. Christie is famous for his song Is This The Way To Amarillo.

The new album by the Sheffield singer will be released early next year.

Lady in blue

On Wednesday Roisin and Simon Henwood attended the Zeitz Foundation fundraising dinner in London. Roisin was looking radiant, so she has clearly fully recovered from her ailment.

Naples apology

Roisin apologised on her official Facebook page for having had to cancel her DJ-set in Naples on the weekend:

Hiya...I want to apologise to those who came to see me at Arenile in Naples last week. I am so sorry I had to cancel but I really wasn't well. There is GOOD NEWS though- the gig has been rescheduled to the 5th of September and I cannot wait to see you all there!

Matthew Herbert after Ruby

Ruby Blue producer Matthew Herbert is known for turning banal objects and substances into musical instruments. On his 2001 album Bodily Functions he generated sounds using human hair, skin and internal bodily organs.

During the recording process of Ruby Blue, Herbert encouraged 'Rosie' to bring everyday objects to the studio so he could make them an integral part of the music. In spite of the album's quirkiness, there are also many elements of pop music present in the songs on Ruby Blue.

In 2006, Pitchfork asked Herbert if working on Ruby Blue influenced his sounds and gave him a taste for pop music. His answer was:

It did, I guess. The thing it really gave me a taste of was the technical aspect. Because with Ruby Blue, I really had to make the record sound a bit poppier and, just technically, I had to record the horns properly and just move away from that DIY place I started from. And because me and Rosie [Murphy] wanted to record and mix the record in just one room, I invested in the studio and I did some research on equipment. Technically, I've certainly gone up a level, and I know just how I like to mix a record.

The influence can indeed be heard on his latest musical efforts, especially on Leipzig, the fabulous lead single from this year's One One album.

Leviathan première in Rome

On Saturday Roisin performed a DJ set in Rome and performed the song Leviathan (Do It Yourself) for the first time.

According to the site News Spettacolo, Roisin will perform a DJ set tomorrow at the closing ceremony of a university race in Rome.
